Connect to Compete is a nonprofit organization created to increase broadband adoption
and digital literacy training in disadvantaged communities throughout the United States.
The nonprofit will implement the following broadband, PC and digital literacy offerings:
$250: New computer from Microsoft
Digital Literacy
Best Buy’s Geek Squad will offer basic digital literacy training in 20 cities around the country. It will also offer train-the-trainer sessions to community organizations, who will then provide additional trainings.
Microsoft will develop an online digital literacy training center for residents in cities that do not have in-person digital literacy classes. It will also offer Microsoft Certification trainings in 15 states.
Free access to Discovery Education’s “premier educational content.”
$1 per course online prep or certification classes on CareerBuilder.com.
Many other jobs and education content offerings.
The above offerings are available to households with at least one child eligible for the free National School Lunch Program, who have not subscribed to broadband service for 90 or more days, and who have no outstanding arrears with a service provider.
The program will not begin nationwide until September 2012, but Phase I programs may begin in select cities earlier that spring.
